Stay-at-Home
Moms Rock!
Have
you ever actually known a mother who spent afternoons
on the couch eating bon-bons?
Probably not. Let's be honest. Being a
mother and running a household is a job, even
if you don't get a paycheck. And how many women
are lucky enough to have husbands who think they're
equally responsible for household tasks? Let's
face it, keeping the kids occupied for an hour
while you clean the house, make dinner or grocery
shop is not a lot compared to all that you do,
but since you're "home all day" there
is a tendency to think you should do most everything.
And you do. In fact, Salary.com, Inc. reported
in May 2008 that the average "market value"
of all the jobs performed by moms who stay home
was almost $117,000 annually. That is, if you
had to hire people to do all the things you do,
that's what you'd have to pay them! The only problem
is that you haven't noticed a pay envelope showing
up in the cookie jar every two weeks.
Deciding to Stay at Home
Maybe you planned to go back to work a few months
after your first child was born-but that was before
you actually became a mother and realized there
was no way you were going to leave your infant
with a stranger at a daycare center for ten hours
a day, five days a week. You're not alone if it
seems to you that the only reasonable and responsible
thing to do is to raise your kids yourself. Women
are hard-wired to nurture their children, and
separation anxiety works both ways. Many working
moms say that they continue to work only out of
economic necessity, and that they'd rather be
at home with their children. They report having
to jump through a lot of hoops at work just to
be able to attend a school program or get a child
to a music lesson or appointment on time.
Upsides
and Downsides
Surveys of stay-at-home moms
show that the majority are very happy with their
decision, even though being a full-time parent
is far from easy. There is huge satisfaction in
being the one who is there to take care of children's
daily needs, to encourage their intellectual and
physical development, and just to have extra snuggle
time.
Despite all these plusses, there
are some minuses. For stay-at-home moms, the number
one fear is getting along on less income. It's
true that you don't have work expenses of transportation,
clothing, and meals out, but you now have all
the baby and child expenses. So the dip in income
continues to be a problem.
Another
dilemma reported by stay-at-home moms who were
previously employed is that they often feel frustrated,
isolated, and bored. No matter how much you love
your kids, if everyone else in your neighborhood
is gone all day, you can begin to feel pretty
lonely. It would be nice to spend some time with
adults and be part of a work team that faces and
solves daily challenges. You may miss having your
own paycheck and feel as though all the income
is really "his" money, that it's OK
to spend it on the kids but not on anything remotely
luxurious for yourself.
There Is an Answer
There is an easy way to keep all of the positives
of being a stay-at-home mom while addressing the
downsides-in fact, eliminating them. There are
hundreds of home-based business opportunities
on the Internet, and there are over 12 BILLION
people worldwide who have access to it. If you
reach only a tiny fraction of the people who are
looking for the services you can provide, you
will have a very healthy customer base. You will
have a source of income, a challenge, and lots
of other people to interact with. And you will
still be there for your children. In fact, as
your own boss you may very well make more money
than you did or can in the outside working world.
You'll spend a lot less time doing it, and you
won't burn a bit of gasoline.
If
you have the will, you can find the way.
As
long as you want to succeed and are ready to learn,
there is absolutely no reason you can't find yourself
in a productive, satisfying job without ever leaving
your home. You can work your own hours, and wear
your pajamas to work after you "commute"
from the breakfast table to the computer. Or stay
right there, enjoy another cup of coffee, and
do the work later. You decide when and how hard
you want to work. You can use the same skills
you used in your previous job-or that you use
to run your household. You don't need a college
degree or any specialized training to start your
own business at home.
Meet Your Co-Workers
You've probably posted messages on bulletin boards,
made comments in chat rooms, and joined forums

to know that there is an extensive community of
home business entrepreneur moms from all over
the world who are enjoying the freedom of being
their own bosses, bringing in good incomes, and
enjoying all the rewards of parenthood.
You could pretty much say that
they have it made-and you could be in their shoes
(or bedroom slippers) in a very short time.
